Human Translation joins the Power of AI

Revolutionizing Translation with AI

With the emergence of ChatGPT, Bard, Bing AI and others, Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing our world. The impact on translation is no different. Machine Translation (MT) technology is evolving at an amazing pace and will transform the translation industry. Popular buzzwords in the world of AI include MT, AI Translation, Statistical Machine Translation (SMT), Neural Machine Translation (NMT) and a range of technologies, such as machine learning, deep learning, and artificial neural networks. Machine learning focuses on training algorithms to learn patterns and make predictions based on provided examples and engineered features, also called sometimes Statistical Machine Translation (SMT). Deep learning is a subset of machine learning, using artificial neural networks (inspired by the structure and functioning of the human brain) to learn complex patterns and representations directly from raw data, enabling the AI to handle more sophisticated tasks like image and speech recognition.

MTPE Method

Machine Translation Post Editing

Although AI is impressive, it is far from being perfect. It does not rely on real-time data and its training is based on human trained data, which is at times incorrect.
Currently all AI tools recommend users to cross-reference the information provided with other sources or consult experts in the specific field of inquiry. This ensures the accuracy and validity of the information received. Critical thinking and verification from multiple sources are important when it comes to obtaining reliable information. This introduces the need for a human activity that takes advantage of the power of AI while reviewing and editing its result. It is expected that the need for this emerging profession will grow.
In the translation domain this is called Machine Translation Post Editing (MTPE). MTPE is the process of revising and editing machine-translated content to improve its quality, accuracy, and fluency. MTPE involves human intervention. A human translator or editor that reviews the machine-generated translation and makes necessary edits and adjustments to ensure that the final output meets the desired quality standards. The aim is to refine and fine-tune the translation output to make it more natural, contextually appropriate, and linguistically accurate.

Our AI Advantage

Translation AI challenges

Harnessing the power of AI to the translation flow seems like a great idea. It has the potential to reduce the overall cost of translations by approximately 30% as well as increasing the productivity workflow. MT accuracy is considered high while its quality could be flawed. Studies show that editing after MT is more productive than after Translation Memory (TM) fuzzy matches.
Grammatical errors are quickly identified by the experienced reviewer while the reviewer might miss numerical and specification related differences between the source and the translation. When non-grammatical text, such as numerical values, change, a reviewer of a fuzzy match might miss these changes while MT will always maintain the correct numerical values.

While there are clear MT advantages, there are disadvantages as well:

  • MT does not maintain consistent terminology during translation.
  • MT is not designed to take advantage of CAT tools that manage the handling of terminology and utilize previously translated text.
  • MT writing style might not be inconsistent.
  • Positioning of Tags and formatting must be heavily reviewed after MT.
  • High fluency of the NMT translation may mask errors to the reviewer in case NMT misses the point of the sentence, especially in out of context situations where NMT may perform poorly.
  • Subtle translation decisions due to micro context is more challenging for NMT compared to macro context.
  • Difficulty to assess the scope of editing work. Sometimes it involves minor changes while other times it requires heavy edits.

With our vast knowledge of the translation management flow and familiarity with MT technologies, we’re able to harness the power of AI while overcoming its obstacles.
